Wallpaper vs Paint: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Quick answer

Paint is cheaper, faster, and easier to change again in a few years. Wallpaper costs more upfront and takes longer to hang well, but it can hide wall imperfections paint won’t and gives texture and pattern paint can’t. Neither is “better” — it depends on the wall, the room, and how long you want to live with the result.

Wallpapering the same room typically runs £300–£650 including hanging labour, on top of the cost of the paper itself. Paper prices vary enormously — a plain, budget vinyl might be £15–£25 a roll, while a good mid-range pattern is often £40–£80 a roll, and a designer paper can be £100+ a roll. A standard room usually needs 5–10 rolls, so the paper cost alone can range from under £100 to several hundred pounds before a single hour of labour is charged.

Time

Paint is quicker in almost every case. A double bedroom might take 1–2 days to paint start to finish. The same room in wallpaper often takes a similar amount of time or longer, especially with a pattern that needs matching across seams — every match point slows the job down and increases waste, since offcuts with a large pattern repeat can’t always be reused.

What each one is actually good at

Paint wins when:

• Walls are in reasonably good condition already
• You want the flexibility to change colour again in a few years without stripping anything first
• You’re covering a large area or a whole house, where cost per square metre matters
• The room gets a lot of daily wear (hallways, kids’ rooms, kitchens) — paint is easier to spot-touch-up than paper

Wallpaper wins when:

• The wall itself has imperfections — old plaster, uneven texture, hairline cracks — that paint would show up and paper can genuinely disguise
• You want a feature wall, texture, or pattern that paint simply can’t produce
• It’s a lower-traffic room (a bedroom, a formal living room) where the paper won’t be knocked or marked daily

The maintenance reality

Paint is easy to touch up — a small scuff on a wall is a five-minute fix with a bit of leftover paint. A damaged patch of wallpaper is harder to repair invisibly, and if you don’t have offcuts saved from the original job, matching a discontinued pattern years later can be genuinely difficult. That’s worth factoring in for hallways, stairs, and anywhere with kids, pets, or moving furniture.

Prep matters more than the finish you choose

Whichever you go with, the wall underneath has to be sound first. Wallpaper doesn’t fix a badly cracked or damp wall — it just delays the problem showing, and can trap moisture behind it if the underlying cause isn’t dealt with. If a wall needs proper repair, that work is the same regardless of what goes on top afterwards.
