Kingston upon Thames is South West London, not South East London or Kent — outside the three areas we usually quote for by name, so worth flagging plainly rather than folding it in as if it were next door. It’s still a realistic distance for a scheduled job, the same way Wimbledon is, just planned in as a dedicated visit rather than squeezed between two nearby jobs. We don’t have a verified Checkatrade review from a KT1 or KT2 postcode yet, so that’s stated honestly too, not implied.
What Kingston’s housing looks like
Kingston is a historic market town on the Thames, and the streets closest to the river and the town centre — around the old Market Place and up towards the Fairfield — mix Georgian and Victorian terraces with newer riverside apartment blocks built as the town centre has redeveloped. Further out towards Norbiton and Surbiton the housing opens up into larger Edwardian semis and detached houses, with more garden fencing and render exterior work than the denser terraces nearer the centre. Kingston Bridge and the riverside towpath mark the natural edge between the two.
Around Canbury Gardens and the roads running down to the river, some of the older townhouses have timber sash windows original to the building, which after a century or more by the water tend to need more careful assessment for rot before stripping than the same style of window further inland — riverside timber weathers differently, even under paint that looks sound from the ground. The newer apartment blocks nearer the station, by contrast, are almost always a straightforward masking-and-repaint job with no period joinery to work around.
What decorating jobs in Kingston usually involve
The split between old town and newer development means two fairly distinct jobs here. Georgian and Victorian houses near the Market Place typically need wood and window stripping before exterior painting goes ahead — the sash windows and door frames carry decades of built-up paint that has to come off first, particularly on properties close enough to the river to have taken on damp over the years. Further out in Norbiton and Surbiton, where the housing is later and drier, it’s more commonly a straight exterior repaint on render and pebble-dash, without the wood-stripping stage adding time to the job.

Services most relevant in Kingston
The Georgian and Victorian terraces near the town centre mean exterior painting and wood and window stripping come up often, particularly on original sash windows. For the riverside flats and larger Edwardian houses further out, interior painting is the more typical request.
